Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, located further to the north, was our next destination during our August 2020 overland trip through Malawi. From Kasungu National Park you have to link up with the M1 at a relatively large town called Kasungu, located in the Central Region of Malawi. The M1 meets the Zambian border at a small village called “Jenda”. So, in order to stay true to our strategy to trace the border, we turned left on an unmarked gravel road going west towards the Lundazi Border Post. From the border post the road is marked as the M10 and later also continues as the M9, passing thru numerous villages, underneath massive trees and across many locally made wooden and steel bridges all the way along the South Rukuru River.

It was a long day on the road and we only managed to reach Vwaza Wildlife Reserve after sunset. But we were soon rewarded with the serenity of this remote location as the night became alive! The reserve is located directly on the Zambian border north-west of Mzuzu nestled against Lake Kazuni and has a wonderful mix of vegetation including forest and grasslands, thin woodland and marsh. The perfect habitat for bird and animal life….and….we were not disappointed!

The location of the reserve also makes it a perfect stop-over on your way to Nyika National Park or the northern parts of Zambia.

We will most certainly be back!

Gidesi  Chalamanda  (born 1930), is most commonly known as “Giddes” He is a Malawian acoustic artist. He was born in Chiradzulu in the Southern region of Malawi. He is one of Malawi’s legendary artists. In the lyrics to his song “Buffalo soldier”, he mentions that if he had enough money he would travel to  America. In 2016, with the help of fans, friends and Malawian organizations both in Malawi and in the Malawian Diaspora, he was able to achieve this dream when he traveled to the US with musicians Davis ndi Edgar. He held a concert at the Black Rock Center for the Arts in the “Pulse of Malawi” concert which celebrated Malawian independence day in Germantown MD

Thawale Lodge at Majete Wildlife Reserve in the south of Malawi has a great view of a watering hole which, at times, was full of animals while we were there. The tent we had boasted an outdoor bathroom including a real 'loo with a view'.

Join us at the upcoming Southern African Railway Association (SARA) Conference and Exhibition as Malawi Railways 1994 (MR94) unveils its ambitious plans to enhance rail connectivity across Malawi and with its neighbouring countries.

MR94, the government infrastructure manager for Malawi, is revitalising its operations with a bold vision. This includes the rehabilitation of several key railway lines, such as the line from Marka on the Mozambique border to Angonia via Nsanje and other key locations. The first phase focuses on improving a 72-kilometre stretch from Marka to Mangochi, followed by an extension from Sandama to Limbe.

Furthermore, MR94 is planning to rehabilitate the line from the capital, Lilongwe, to Mchinji, on the Zambian border, which is a crucial step for improving trade connections between the two countries. An ongoing feasibility study also explores the potential of expanding the rail network to the north, with the aim of integrating Malawi’s northern territories into the rail grid and establishing connectivity with Tanzania.
